Do Bleeding Gums Indicate A Problem With Your Oral Health?
We know that it can be concerning when you experience a problem with your oral health. One common issue that patients have is bleeding gums. We all experience bleeding gums from time to time. It can occur from something as simple as food becoming trapped between the teeth or a sharp piece of food poking you in the gums. If it occurs regularly, your bleeding gums can be an indication that there is something wrong with your oral health. Some possible causes of bleeding gums include:
Problem with Oral Hygiene
- One of the most common reasons patients experience bleeding gums is due to a problem with their oral hygiene. Brushing too vigorously can cause trauma to the gums, which will lead to bleeding. Using dental floss in a rough manner can also cause the gums to bleed. Be sure to use gentle motions when brushing, and do not force the floss into your gums. If you are unsure how to brush and floss, we would love to help during your next visit. Gums can also bleed if you are not brushing and flossing enough. Be sure that you are brushing a minimum of twice daily and flossing once a day.
Gum Disease
- One of the few warning signs of gum disease is bleeding gums. Gum disease is common among adults and occurs when there is a buildup of plaque and tartar along the gum line. We commonly detect this condition during routine hygiene examination appointments.
Medications
